The following are explanation about each role and how they work with one another: Registry: A domain name registry is an organization that manages top-level domain names. They create domain name extensions, set the rules for that domain name, and work with registrars to sell domain names to the public. For example, Kenic manages the registration of .com domain names and their domain name system (DNS). Why should I keep my domain name registered?

If you lose your domain name you can easily lose your whole online identity. Because you can only register a domain name for a year or so, you will need to make sure that you renew it before the expiry date. Once your domain name expires, you will no longer own that domain name. Your Registrar will then own it and be able to sell your domain name to the highest bidder. There are a limited number of predefined TLDs, such as .com, .net, .biz, .org and .co. The second-level domain name includes the top-level domain and the domain name itself.
